Night Train to Mumbai

In the late morning of 31 October 2006, we left Rajasthan by train.

At crowded Ajmer station, we went on board of the Aravali Express overnight train to Mumbai.

A/C 2nd class sleeping compartments had been booked well in advance. The 20 hours train ride gave us plenty of opportunities to chat with Indian travellers, to look out of the window to see fantastic landscapes slowly move by, to try the Indian train food, and to have some sleep in the end.

An ample choice of train menus - vegetarian or non vegetarian, very spicy or moderately hot - could be ordered in advance during the ride. All the various dishes were delivered at one of the next stations we were passing - a logistical masterpiece with a failure rate around zero that has been placing the Indian train services on the world's top ranking in terms of reliability.

The train did not seem to gain much speed. Its doors were open most of the time to let us breathe the gentle air of a night in the tropics. In spite or maybe because of the slow ride we took the distance of more than 1000 kilometres in good comfort and arrived at Mumbai in the morning of November 1 - exactly on schedule.
