New Delhi
Hindus (82%) make up a majority of New Delhi's population. There are also sizeable communities of Muslims (11.7%), Sikhs (4.0%), Jains (1.1%) and Christians (0.9%). Minorities include Buddhists and Jews.
Lotus Temple of the Bahá'í Faith is a renowned example of contemporary Indian architecture, and a popular landmark.
Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti (Gandhi's birthday) are widely celebrated national events. Delhiites celebrate India's Independence Day (15 August) by flying kites considered a symbol of freedom. Religious festivals include Diwali (the festival of light) that we were lucky to celebrate with our hosts at the time of our visit.
