The "J. J." in the name of the school stands for Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy. The first art class was started at the Elphinstone Institution on March 2, 1857. In 1878, the school moved to its own building where it is currently situated. Sir J. J. School of Art has been affiliated with the University of Mumbai since 1981, and offers degrees in fine art and sculpture. The degree course in sculpture was started in 1983. The students trained at the CAS soon were in considerable demand from the commercial industries of Mumbai to design publications for selling their products and services. The young Indian advertising industry hired a number of talented students of the CAS who are now considered to be among the fathers of Indian advertising. Sir J. J. The current course leads to successful students receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Applied Art from Mumbai University. The total duration of this course is four years, with the first year referred to as a "Foundation" year, and the later three being referred to as "Specialisation" years. A student chooses his or her area of major specialization from amongst areas such as Illustration, Photography, Typography, Exhibition Display or Visualization. The Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art provides a significant number of the Indian advertising industry's top art talents. The campus is located in south Mumbai near Victoria Station. It houses the Sir J. J. The campus contains many trees that are more than a century old, and it houses numerous heritage buildings, the most famous among them Rudyard Kipling's birthplace. Due to the dates of our itinerary, our visit to Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art had to take place during a week of Indian holidays. Prof. G. G. Waghmare, M.F.A., Dean of Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art, made it possible for us to meet with a group of his professors and students, attend a lecture and see an exhibition of students' works during their holidays. Thank you, Professor Waghmare. Our visit to Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art was kindly arranged by Mr. Anthony Joseph, CEO of IBD India Book distributors, Mumbai, who also generously provided lunch for all the people attending the meeting of students and teachers from India and Austria at the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art. Thank you, Anthony. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_J._J._School_of_Art http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_J.J._Institute_of_Applied_Art |
